Endeavor of Prayer

For the last few years I haven't been able to shake it: a deepening conviction that our nation is in serious trouble. Natural disasters, unconquerable enemies, growing immorality, and a coldness toward God in the hearts of many lead me to believe that our nation is in desperate need of spiritual revival. Some may accuse me of being pessimistic, but I believe that this is an honest and accurate appraisal of what happens when a nation departs from God. I believe that we are living in the days of which Jesus said: "And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold." (Matthew 24:12)

What do we do? Do we ignore the signs and pretend that every day and in every way things are getting better and better? Do we conclude that nothing is going to stop this train and simply jump out of the way, holding tightly to our loved ones until Jesus comes? Or do we determine that by the grace, power and authority given to us by God we are going to make a difference?

God has given us a mighty instrument for effecting change. Last week I spent three days with about forty other Treasure Valley pastors, praying for ourselves, our families, our congregations and our cities. My growing conviction is that if we are going to see God transform our community, state and nation, then it will only be through the joint efforts of many Christians crying out to God. Every revival of the past has begun this way, and there is no reason for us to think that there will be a revival in our day without such effectual and fervent prayer by God's people.
