Matthew 24:32-51
“Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.” (Matthew 24:35, NKJV)
Jesus responded to His disciples’ question about the sign of His coming and the end of the age. There would be several signs to watch for (Matthew 24:1-31). Then Jesus told them to learn from the fig tree. When its branches are tender and it puts out leaves, you know summer is near. Likewise, when we see all these things happening, then we know His coming is near—He is at the door! Heaven and earth will pass away, but His words will never pass away.
Our world is constantly changing. Technology changes, cultural values change, our bodies change, and relationships change. The heavens and earth were not made to last forever. One day they will pass away and melt with fervent heat (2 Peter 3:12). One thing in the universe is a constant: the everlasting Word of God. The Word, like God Himself, never changes. Therefore, the best thing we can do is to hold on to the unchanging Word.
I can think of nothing better to do in this New Year than to grow in our knowledge and practice of God’s Word. This will anchor our souls in heavenly things and safeguard us against sin. It will be a source of life, comfort, encouragement, and strength. God’s Word, rightly interpreted and applied by the Holy Spirit, is all that we need to overcome the flesh, the world, and the devil in these last days. But we must be in the Word so that the Word may be in us.
There are many great Bible reading plans available online. We have one that we hand out each month with our bulletin, also available on our website. I believe such plans are good because they provide a structured way to know the whole counsel of God. But if you follow a Bible plan, don’t just read to check off your box. Instead, ask God to speak to you by the Holy Spirit as you read it and apply His Word to your life as you need it. Our time in God’s Word should not be a chore but a delight! It is how we build ourselves up in our most holy faith. And it will give the Spirit lots of ammo when we face the enemy!
“Heavenly Father, thank you for your unchanging Word. Help us value it more in this New Year. Help us be devoted to knowing and applying it so that we can live for Jesus until He comes again. In His name we pray. Amen.”
