Isaiah 2
“Their land is also full of idols. They worship the work of their own hands, that which their own fingers have made.” (Isaiah 2:8, NKJV)
What sorrow Isaiah must have felt as he looked around Jerusalem and Judah and saw all the high places where people worshiped. How it must have troubled him to see God’s covenant people worshiping foreign gods. These things were worthless; they had no power to save. Moreover, they stood between the Jews and their only true God. They could not love Yahweh while they were “playing the harlot” with other gods.
What idols do people worship today? In the land we see the gods of money, power, sex and pleasure. People are lovers of self rather than lovers of God. They worship the works of their own hands. They put worthless things before their eyes and give all their time, energy and money to serve them. But what value will these things be when the LORD comes to judge the earth?
“In that day mankind will cast away their idols of silver and their idols of gold, which they made for themselves to worship.” (Isaiah 2:20, ESV)
O, that we would regard our idols today as we will regard them then! We will not see them as things to be coveted but as things to cast away. They will not be considered objects of desire but agents of corruption.
“Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.” (1 John 5:21, NKJV)
