Esther 9:1-17

“On that day, the enemies of the Jews had hoped to overpower them, but quite the opposite happened. It was the Jews who overpowered their enemies.” (Esther 9:1, NLT)

Everyone likes a good victory—especially when you’re on the winning side! Esther and Mordecai had succeeded with God’s help in passing a decree that would enable the Jews throughout the Persian Empire to take up arms and defend themselves against their enemies. But it was still up to them to stand and fight. I would imagine that as the day approached, the Jews were afraid. Wouldn’t you be afraid if you knew that people were coming to kill you and take away all your goods? But they stood their ground and fought hard for their families, their homes, and their Jewish neighbors. None of their enemies could stand against them, for they were all afraid. Moreover, the nobles of the provinces, the highest officers, and the royal officials helped the Jews because they feared Mordecai and the powerful position he held in the empire.

Our battle is not against flesh and blood but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world (Ephesians 6:12). Nevertheless, Satan has many people working for him. Antisemitism is on the rise, as is persecution against Christians. Many people hate God and hate the church. They hate the morality and traditional standards that we represent. It can be disturbing to know that you are the object of someone’s vehement hatred. But just like the Jews in the days of Esther and Mordecai, we have been armed with everything we need to stand and fight. We have been given the full armor of God. We have the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God and the shield of faith which extinguishes every flaming arrow of Satan. The weapons of our warfare are not carnal (fleshly) but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds of sin and rebellion and casting down every argument and lie that exalts itself against the knowledge of God (2 Corinthians 10:3-5). At times we may be afraid. But if we are standing in the power and authority of Jesus, then the enemy is far more afraid of us—or rather of Christ in us.

As we start a new work week, let us stand firm on God’s promises knowing that the One who is in us is greater than he who is in the world. Then stand and fight the good fight for your families, your friends, and your neighbors!
