Matthew 18:1-14

“Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 18:4, ESV)

I have five teachers. They have taught me how to trust. They have helped me to experience unconditional love. They have shown me that life is more fun when we stop worrying and enjoy the ride. They have also granted me permission to play. They are my grandchildren, and they range in age from 15 to 3 years old.

When the disciples were arguing about which one of them would be the greatest, Jesus set a child before them. He said, “Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.” Children are humble, dependent, trusting, and creative. They naturally laugh, play, and dance. They easily make friends. They are unpretentious, unentitled, and sympathetic. They are transparent…until they learn to lie to avoid pain or punishment. They easily offend, are easily offended, and quickly forgive. And we love them just the way they are.

Jesus has given us the model to follow. We cannot even enter heaven unless we become like little children. But those who master this art will be considered the greatest in the kingdom.

David wrote:

“LORD, my heart is not haughty, nor my eyes lofty. Neither do I concern myself with great matters, nor with things too profound for me. Surely, I have calmed and quieted my soul, Like a weaned child with his mother. Like a weaned child is my soul within me.” (Psalm 131:1–2, NKJV)

May we climb into the lap of our Abba Father and rest, casting all our cares and concerns on Him, because He cares for us.
