Matthew 10:24-42

“And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me.” (Matthew 10:38, NKJV)

I don’t think we can understand the impact these words had on Jesus’ followers. They knew well the horrors of execution by crucifixion. It was unlawful to crucify Roman citizens, and the practice was not even discussed in social gatherings. But Jesus told His followers to be prepared to be crucified. Anyone who would not pick up his own cross was unworthy of Him. This does not sound like the sales pitch they give you at a military recruiting office!

But Jesus wants people to understand what they are signing up for. We are not called to seek self-fulfillment; we are called to die. Jesus left us an example that we should follow in His steps (1 Peter 2:21). The cross is not something for the Christian to shun, but to fully embrace. Jesus lived His entire life beneath its deadly shadow, yet He never turned aside from marching to Calvary. And this is why authentic Christianity will never be popular. Charlatans and hypocrites abound who will promise you health, wealth, and prosperity, but Jesus tells us the truth.

“A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. It is enough for a disciple that he be like his teacher, and a servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more will they call those of his household!” (Matthew 10:24–25, NKJV)

Jesus never sinned. He spent His entire life serving others. He only spoke the truth in love. And what did the world do to Him? Therefore, we must not despair when the world hates us. We have been created, chosen, and called for this. But we will overcome with joy if, by the grace of God, we will take up our cross for Jesus, as He took up His cross for us.
