Genesis 2:15-25
“Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” (Genesis 2:24, NKJV)
Last July, marked 41 years since Cindy and I were married. It has been the adventure of a lifetime. From living in a travel trailer for the first nine months of our marriage, to owning our own condo where we had our firstborn son, to the birth of our daughter, to moving from Sacramento to Boise to start a church in 1994, God has been overwhelmingly good to us. Trusting in Jesus for my salvation was the best decision I’ve ever made, but the second-best decision was marrying Cindy, who is still the love of my life and the delight of my eyes.
On the sixth day of creation, God surveyed His entire creation and said it was “very good”. But there was one thing that was not good.
“Then the LORD God said, ‘It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.’” (Genesis 2:18, NKJV)
God knew that man needed help, and He designed woman to be the perfect complement. He put Adam into a deep sleep and took one of his ribs from which He formed Eve. Man was made from dust, but woman was the first person to come from another person.
“The woman was made of a rib out of the side of Adam; not made out of his head to rule over him, nor out of his feet to be trampled upon by him, but out of his side to be equal with him, under his arm to be protected, and near his heart to be beloved.” (Matthew Henry)
Genesis is the book of beginnings, including the origin of marriage and family. God told Adam and Eve to be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it. Not only did God bring Adam and Eve together for companionship, but also to be a blessing to the entire world.
If you are married, how has God brought you together with your spouse? What has He called you to do as a couple? Are you doing it?
If you are single and desire to find a life companion, how can you begin praying today for that person?
