The Sign of the Covenant
God makes His covenant with Abram, promising to multiply him exceedingly. He establishes circumcision as the sign of the covenant. This is a cutting away of the flesh in the most sensitive part of the male anatomy, and it symbolizes a life lived not to please the flesh but to please the Spirit.
When the apostle Paul preached the Gospel to Gentiles, he did not require them to be circumcised physically, but he did require circumcision of the heart (Romans 2:29). Even Moses spoke of the heart being circumcised.
“And the Lord your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your descendants, to love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, that you may live.” (Deuteronomy 30:6, NKJV)
Who is it who circumcises the heart? What do you think that means? What is our part? (See Deut. 10:16, Gal. 5:24)
