Psalm 105:1-22
“He remembers His covenant forever, the word which He commanded for a thousand generations.” (Psalm 105:8, NKJV)
As I get older, I realize that my memory isn’t what it used to be. Recently, Cindy and I watched a movie together, and we were about a quarter of the way through it before we both realized that we had seen it before a couple of years ago. And even then we couldn’t remember the ending!
But God never forgets anything. He especially remembers all the promises He has made. When the nation of Israel rebelled against Him and worshiped other gods, He was unwilling to utterly forsake them because He remembered His covenant with Abraham and the patriarchs. He remembers His promises for a thousand generations, and He is always faithful to them.
The apostle Paul wrote to Timothy:
“This is a faithful saying: ‘For if we died with Him, we shall also live with Him. If we endure, we shall also reign with Him. If we deny Him, He also will deny us. If we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself.’” (2 Timothy 2:11–13, NKJV)
God is faithful to His promises because He cannot deny Himself. It is impossible for Him to lie, and it is impossible for Him not to fulfill His Word. This ought to bring us much comfort because His Word is the one thing in life we can absolutely depend upon no matter what is happening around us or how we feel within us. God is faithful, and He wants us to be people of faith.
Over the years, as we have often met to pray for the completion of our building, I have said, “The one resource we cannot afford to be without is faith.” This is true in so many aspects of life. We must hold fast to the Word of God. We must believe that what God has begun, He will finish. We may be forgetful, but God never forgets His promises!
