Psalm 7

“I come to you for protection, O LORD my God. Save me from my persecutors—rescue me!” (Psalm 7:1, NLT)

As a warrior and a king, David had many enemies. He wrote this song about Cush from the tribe of Benjamin of whom we know nothing. Evidently, David was being falsely accused of either betraying a friend or plundering an enemy without just cause (v. 3). But he knew that he could only find shelter in Almighty God. His conscience was clear. He was innocent of the charges they were bringing against him. David also knew that he couldn’t defend himself. The LORD alone was his defense (v. 10). Therefore, David could rest His case with the One who judges justly.

“The LORD shall judge the peoples; judge me, O LORD, according to my righteousness, and according to my integrity within me.” (Psalm 7:8, NKJV)

How quickly people judge people and things they do not understand. But David knew that God is the Judge, and His judgment is all that matters. David maintained his personal integrity. Therefore, he had nothing to fear in the day of judgment.

“Therefore do not pronounce judgment before the time, before the Lord comes, who will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness and will disclose the purposes of the heart.” (1 Corinthians 4:5, ESV)

“Do not grumble against one another, brethren, lest you be condemned. Behold, the Judge is standing at the door!” (James 5:9, NKJV)

David had seen the LORD defeat his enemies on numerous occasions; he had confidence in God that this situation would be no different.

“If a person does not repent, God will sharpen his sword; he will bend and string his bow. He will prepare his deadly weapons and shoot his flaming arrows.” (Psalm 7:12–13, NLT)

Christian, do you have such confidence in the LORD? Is your conscience clear? If not, then ask God to purge your heart of sin and put things right. Do you have an enemy? Trust in the LORD to be your defense. Wait upon Him and continue to do good. The One who hides you beneath the shadow of His wings will protect you. When the fiery indignation comes, you will see it consume the wicked, but the same fire will purify you! Then the LORD will bring you out into a broad and pleasant place because He delights in you! (Psalm 18:19)
