Psalm 33

“For the word of the LORD is right, and all His work is done in truth.” (Psalm 33:4, NKJV)

Have you ever noticed how much controversy is in the world? We see it clearly in the world of politics where candidates carve out their positions and platforms on which they stand. We see it in the business world as laborers strike against management, holding out for better terms. We also see it in our own personal relationships when we have differences of opinion with someone else. Who is right? Who is wrong? The word of God is the great settler of arguments. Before it, our own opinions fall like Dagon before the Ark of the Covenant (1 Samuel 5:1-5).

The word is God is the standard of righteousness that endures forever. According to Jesus, not one jot (the smallest letter) or tittle (the smallest stroke of a letter) from the law will pass away until everything is fulfilled (Matthew 5:18). By God’s word we judge ourselves:

“For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12, NKJV)

The word of God is a mirror to help us see ourselves as we truly are. We are easily deceived, thinking we are spiritual when we are soulish. But the word divides between the soul and the spirit to show us what is really in our hearts.

However, if the word only convicted us of sin, then we would be crushed. But the same word convinces us of God’s love.

“Behold, the eye of the LORD is on those who fear him, on those who hope in his steadfast love.” (Psalm 33:18, ESV)

We have a joyful, confident expectation of God’s steadfast love because Christ died for us while we were still sinners. He took our place and received the punishment that we deserved. How great is the Father’s love toward us! How infinite are His tender mercies!

This is why we should meditate on God’s word day and night. It shows us our faults, but it also convinces us of God’s steadfast love. Let us plan to take a deep dive into His word today and ask God to make it living, powerful and comforting to us.
