Psalm 27
“One thing I have desired of the LORD, that will I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to inquire in His temple.” (Psalm 27:4, NKJV)
When I was a child, my grandfather gave me a magnifying glass. I loved to take it outside in the hot summer sun and burn holes in leaves and paper. (What is it about boys playing with fire?) As the glass focused the sun’s rays on a single point they became destructive. There is great power in concentration.
David understood this principle. No doubt he had practiced it on the battlefield, as he focused his most valiant warriors on the weakest point in the enemy’s frontline. But he also understood the power of focus in worship. David knew that the most important thing he could do was to worship God. Obtaining God’s protection, provision and power was essential for battling enemies and building the kingdom.
But there was another reason David sought the LORD with such singlemindedness: he delighted to be in His presence. He wanted to live in the LORD’s house every day of his life. Now the temple had not yet been built. After becoming king, David brought the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem and pitched a tent for it. But because David was of the tribe of Judah, and not the high priest, he could not enter the inner sanctuary and gaze upon the Ark. The closest he could come was to stand outside the tent in Jerusalem or go to the tabernacle in Gibeon where he could offer sacrifices on the altar of burnt offering (1 Chronicles 21:29). David could inquire of the high priest, but there was no temple and no opportunity for him to behold the beauty of the LORD—at least not physically. But spiritually he could draw near to the LORD whenever he wanted. He saw the LORD’s beauty in worship, and that is where he wanted to remain.
We have an even greater privilege, for we can enter the Most Holy Place with confidence by the blood of Jesus (Hebrews 10:19-22). We have an invitation to enter the LORD’s house and approach His throne of grace whenever we want. Are we taking advantage of our privilege? Are we focusing our time and energy on seeking God?
“For in the time of trouble He shall hide me in His pavilion; in the secret place of His tabernacle He shall hide me; He shall set me high upon a rock.” (Psalm 27:5, NKJV)
If we focus on God, then He will focus His protection, power and provision on us to help us do His will. Moreover, He will fill us with His love, joy and peace.
“Heavenly Father, thank you that we can always abide in your presence. Help us today to seek you with all our hearts and fill our hands with your work. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.”
