Psalm 59
“Deliver me from my enemies, O my God; defend me from those who rise up against me.” (Psalm 59:1, NKJV)
In Psalm 59, David cried out to the LORD for help and deliverance, because King Saul was seeking to take his life. The situation became even more dangerous, for Saul sent servants to David’s house to watch for him and kill him in the morning (1 Samuel 19:11). But Michal, David’s wife, warned him and let him down through a window, so he escaped. David was alone and a fugitive, even though he had done nothing wrong.
“O my Strength, I will watch for you, for you, O God, are my fortress. My God in his steadfast love will meet me; God will let me look in triumph on my enemies.” (Psalm 59:9–10, ESV)
When David had no human support, he watched for the LORD. He diligently sought the LORD’s face in prayer and relied upon His steadfast love to strengthen him. David had confidence that God would grant him victory over his enemies. Rather than complaining about his circumstances, David chose to sing praises to God, for He was his fortress and refuge in the day of trouble.
Unlike David, we probably don’t have people hunting us like a fox to kill us. Nevertheless, we must still watch for the LORD and pray. When the day of trouble comes, we should seek shelter and strength in His steadfast love. If we have walked in integrity, then we can rest assured that God will defend us against our enemies. And if we have failed in some way, then we can confess our sin, knowing that Christ is our Advocate and God will forgive and protect us. Rather than complaining over our adversaries or even over our adverse circumstances, let us sing and rejoice in the power and love of God. He is a mighty fortress and ever-present help in times of trouble!
