Psalm 69:22-70:5

“For God will save Jerusalem and rebuild the towns of Judah. His people will live there and settle in their own land. The descendants of those who obey him will inherit the land, and those who love him will live there in safety.” (Psalm 69:35–36, NLT)

After owning our church property for over two decades, we finally began to build on it. The exterior shell is now built, and we are working on the inside. We look forward to the day when we can meet there for services. Why is a building project so exciting? For me, it is a fulfilled desire. It is the culmination of many years of planning and hard work.

“Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a desire fulfilled is a tree of life.” (Proverbs 13:12, ESV)

However, we would not have the same joy if we did not know that God was building it.

“Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.” (Psalm 127:1, ESV)

God enabled us to buy the land, but for many years we struggled to develop it. Then God helped us to assemble our team; He guided us in the design, provided the funds, and moved in the hearts of our people to continue the work.

Likewise, David began Psalm 69 in the lowlands. He felt like he was drowning in deep waters because of all the people who hated him without a cause. But he ended the song on the high note that God was rebuilding the towns of Judah. He would provide a place for His people where they could dwell. The descendants of the Lord’s people would inherit the land, and all those who loved God would safely live there.

As we watch many young people come to our church and grow in their love for Jesus, our hearts are filled with joy. God is building for their future and for ours. He is giving us all a safe place. He is enlarging our sheep pen and bringing more sheep! As we meditate on God’s goodness and faithfulness, how can we keep from singing?
