Psalm 86

“Teach me your way, O LORD, that I may walk in your truth; unite my heart to fear your name.” (Psalm 86:11, ESV)

David certainly had a way with words. This is the only psalm he wrote in the third book of psalms (Psalms 73-89). It is a prayer for mercy and strength. It is also an acknowledgment of his inner struggle. In his spirit David longed to serve the LORD, but in his flesh he struggled to do the right thing and keep the way of the LORD. He prays to know the way of truth so he can walk in it; and he asks God to unite his heart to fear His name.

I am reminded of what Paul wrote in Romans 7:

“For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find. For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice.” (Romans 7:18–19, NKJV)

Both David and Paul knew that they were divided within. Part of them wanted to fear God and obey His commandments, but another part was self-serving. They needed a Source of help that was outside themselves. They needed God’s mercy and strength to overcome the sin within and be fully consecrated to God.

I think that if we are honest with ourselves, we would all admit that this has been our own experience. We have tried to live for Christ. We have tried to do the right thing and love others unselfishly. But at times we find self-love taking over, making us slaves to the sin within. Thankfully, we have a Source of mercy and strength to help us overcome.

“But you, O Lord, are a God of compassion and mercy, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness.” (Psalm 86:15, NLT)

David knew his own divided heart, but he also knew God’s faithful and compassionate heart. He knew that God would deliver him from compromise and help him to live a holy life.

Have you discovered this secret power to help you overcome sin and walk faithfully in the way of truth?
