Psalm 89:1-18

“I will sing of the mercies of the LORD forever. With my mouth will I make known your faithfulness to all generations.” (Psalm 89:1, NKJV)

Psalm 89 begins with Ethan the Ezrahite praising God for His mercy, faithfulness, and wonders. Who is like Him? Righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne. Those who walk in the light of His countenance are blessed, and they rejoice in His name all day long. Therefore, Ethan would sing of His mercies forever, and he would make known His faithfulness to every generation. The fact that we are studying this psalm today proves that he was successful.

Do we know anything about the author? According to 1 Kings 4:31, Ethan the Ezrahite was a renowned wise man who was a contemporary of King Solomon. Evidently, he considered proclaiming God’s mercies and faithfulness to be a very wise thing to do.

Do we agree with Ethan? Recently, I heard it said that we don’t bring people to Christ (God does that—John 6:44). But we bring Christ to people. We are living epistles (2 Corinthians 3:3). We are ambassadors for Christ. God is pleading through us on Christ’s behalf for others to be reconciled to God (2 Corinthians 5:20).

Recently, our church was given a wonderful opportunity to be Christ’s ambassadors. The elementary school that is nearest to our church location allowed us to set up a table at their back-to-school night to promote the “Good News Club”. We were able to talk with parents and their children about this free club that meets after school in one of the classrooms. We sing songs, play games, teach Bible stories, and help children memorize Scripture. We were able to distribute about 30 flyers to interested families. One mom who just moved from Sacramento told us that she “got chills” when she heard what we were doing in the school. She had never heard of anything like this happening in California!

Opportunities abound for us to let our light shine and to share the good news of what God has done for the world and for us personally. We do this by first walking in the light of His countenance. We seek His face daily and ask Him to guide our steps in His way. Then we look out for those who need His touch. Many people have no hope, and that is tragic. Let us be wise and help open their eyes to the tender mercies, lovingkindness, and faithfulness of our Lord Jesus Christ!
