Psalm 87-88

“O LORD, I cry out to you. I will keep on pleading day by day.” (Psalm 88:13, NLT)

Psalm 88 is written by Heman the Ezrahite. It reflects the heart of an afflicted soul. His life is full of troubles, and he is convinced that death is imminent. He is in the lowest pit and darkest depths, and he has no more strength. He feels the wrath of God, crashing down upon him in wave after wave. He is abandoned by all his friends. Lastly, he is confined in a tight place, and he can find no way out.

What would you do in such a situation? Reach out to friends? Rant on social media? Take more meds? Call your attorney?

Heman cried out to the LORD and not just once. He continued pleading with God day by day. He would not be distracted nor quit until the answer came.

The Lord taught us in the parable of the persistent widow to always pray and never give up (Luke 18:1-8). Even though she pled her case to an unjust judge, he was finally persuaded to act because she refused to quit. Then Jesus says, “And won’t God give justice to His chosen ones who cry out to Him day and night? I tell you that He will avenge them speedily.”

But He ends with a profound question:

“Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?” (Luke 18:8, ESV)

When we go through severe afflictions, this is what pleases the Lord. He wants us to cry out to Him in faith knowing that He is our only hope. He wants us to keep praying day and night and not give up. He hears the cry of His children. He will work on our behalf and do it quickly.

Jesus places the responsibility on us to keep praying in faith. So when He comes will He find us doing this?
