Genesis 31:1-21

“I am the God who appeared to you at Bethel, the place where you anointed the pillar of stone and made your vow to me. Now get ready and leave this country and return to the land of your birth.” (Genesis 31:13, NLT)

Six years earlier, Jacob had wanted to leave Padan Aram to return to the land of Canaan. But his Uncle Laban let him name his wages, so Jacob remained. Over the next six years, God abundantly prospered Jacob. But now circumstances had changed, and Laban’s sons were envious of Jacob’s wealth. Perhaps Jacob was already considering leaving his father-in-law and returning to Canaan. Then the LORD said to Jacob, “Return to the land of your father and grandfather and to your relatives there, and I will be with you.”

Walking with the Lord isn’t easy. Sometimes we want to jump ahead because we are impatient. Other times we drag our feet. We want to respond to circumstances, but is it time to act? Or should we wait on God? Jacob waited until the circumstances and the Word of the LORD both indicated it was time to move. And I have found that is a good method for discerning God’s will and timing. As children of God, we are to be led by the Spirit.

“For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.” (Romans 8:14, NLT)

The LORD confirmed it was the right move by preparing Leah and Rachel’s hearts. Sadly, there was no love lost for them to leave their father, who had squandered the dowry he received from Jacob by his fourteen years of labor.

Are you sensing that God is changing direction in your life or leading you to take a step of faith? Look for favorable circumstances, the peace of God in your heart, the confirmation of other believers, and above all, the Word of God to be a lamp to your feet and a light to your path. Then be strong and courageous! I’ve never seen God spank his kids for stepping out in faith.
