Ezekiel 10
“When they went, they went toward any of their four directions; they did not turn aside when they went, but followed in the direction the head was facing. They did not turn aside when they went.” (Ezekiel 10:11, NKJV)
Ezekiel was given a vision of the chariot throne of God. He saw the same four cherubim he observed in chapter 1 when he was at the River Chebar. These upheld the firmament or expanse which supported the throne of God. Beneath each cherub was a wheel within a wheel that could move in any of four directions. The cherubim all moved in unison with their four faces set in the direction in which they were moving. Their wheels had eyes all around, and the spirit of the cherubim was in the wheels.
The glory of the LORD departed from the threshold of the temple and stood over the cherubim who lifted their wings and mounted up from the earth. God’s chariot throne was moving, for He was leaving the temple and would soon leave Jerusalem.
Frankly, Ezekiel’s vision is so other-worldly that it is difficult for me to picture. But one thing stands out to me: whenever and wherever each wheel went, it did not turn aside but followed in the direction of the cherub’s head. Since each cherub’s spirit was in the wheel, the spirit always followed the head.
We also are living spirits designed to move. We carry the Lord with us wherever we go, for He dwells with us. But we must follow in the direction of the Head. We must move whenever and wherever He tells us without turning aside to the right or to the left. This is only possible if our eyes are always fixed on Him. The Lord has places He wants to go, people He wants to visit, and good works He wants to do. He doesn’t need us, but He chooses to use us. He is content to have us carry Him wherever we go, but we are not independent, as the cherubim and wheels are not independent. We are created for God’s pleasure and purpose, and He wants us to follow Him. Which direction is our Head facing today?
