Psalm 40
“Blessed is that man who makes the LORD his trust, and does not respect the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.” (Psalm 40:4, NKJV)
We must all choose in whom or in what we place our trust. Some trust in money as their security. But it will do little for them on the day they die and even less on the day of judgment. Some trust in another person—a husband or a wife—to carry them through life. But what do they do when that person leaves them? Some trust in their work to fulfill them and give them a sense of significance. But they cannot work forever, and sooner or later they will fall out of favor and lose their position or prestige.
But the person who trusts in the LORD is blessed forever. God will always be there; He will never leave us nor forsake us. If we believe in Jesus Christ, then God will justify us on the day of judgment. God will still love us when our health is failing and we can no longer produce.
The person who trusts completely in the LORD cannot be a respecter of the proud, since he knows that God resists the proud. Nor can he respect the liar and deceiver, for Satan is the father of lies. If we trust in the LORD, then we cannot fear men. Nor can we allow others to turn us aside from obeying Christ. Trusting in God means we lean all our weight on Him alone.
As David wrote this psalm, the Holy Spirit gave him prophetic insight.
“Then I said, ‘Behold, I come; in the scroll of the book it is written of me. I delight to do Your will, O my God, and Your law is within my heart.’” (Psalm 40:7–8, NKJV)
The author of Hebrews applies these verses to Jesus Christ (Hebrews 10:5-7). Jesus delighted to come into the world to do the Father’s will. The volume of Scripture speaks of Him, and He is the fulfillment of it. He willingly offered Himself as the sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, He alone is worthy of our worship. Have you made Him your trust?
