Song of Solomon 6:4-13
“I went down to the grove of walnut trees and out to the valley to see the new spring growth, to see whether the grapevines had budded or the pomegranates were in bloom.” (Song of Solomon 6:11, NLT)
“Do you love me?” Whether she voices these words or not, it is the question on every woman’s mind. During their courtship she wants to see evidence of his love. But what about many years into the marriage? She still wants proof that he loves her.
So the man complements her, describing her beauty as he did at first. He wants to reassure her that nothing has changed. “I only have eyes for you.” He speaks kind words dripping with affection:
“My dove, my perfect one, is the only one...” (Song of Solomon 6:9a, NKJV)
And yet…it’s springtime, and she wants to know that their love is as blossoming and fruitful as it was in the beginning. She wants him to show her.
Are we so different? Do we not long to be reassured of Christ’s love? God has proven to us a thousand times that He loves us by caring for our needs. He has answered our prayers. He protects us and gives us the desires of our hearts. But we know ourselves and know that we have sinned and fallen short. And so we long to know, “Do you still love me?”
In Solomon’s song, the beloved does still love the Shulamite as he did at first. And in our love song with Jesus, He still loves us. Before we were born, Christ died for us. He knew everything about us and every sin we would ever commit, and still He said, “My dove, my perfect one.” He has removed our filthy garments, washed us in His blood, and clothed us in His perfect righteousness. There is nothing better than for us to know the fullness of His love for us and to walk joyfully in it!
