Zechariah 2
“‘Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion! For behold, I am coming and I will dwell in your midst,’ says the LORD. ‘Many nations shall be joined to the LORD in that day, and they shall become My people. And I will dwell in your midst. Then you will know that the LORD of hosts has sent Me to you.’” (Zechariah 2:10–11, NKJV)
As Zechariah prophesied to the people who returned from Babylonian exile, he had one foot in the present and one in the future. He motivated the people to present action by showing them wonderful visions of the future. They knew that the decisions they made today would have a profound outcome tomorrow. Do we consider this? Do we understand that each choice we make sets in motion a string of events that will lead us to one destination or another? If they obeyed the LORD, then He would give them a glorious future worth singing about. But if they disobeyed, then they would disqualify themselves from receiving it.
I think we should think more about our heavenly citizenship and about our future in the kingdom age. Perhaps this would help us not to get so bogged down with the cares of this life. Maybe this would also help us to make better choices. It has been said that we make our choices, and then our choices turn and make us. They also decide our destiny.
The Lord is coming soon to make His enemies His footstool and to reign over the nations. He wants us to be part of His everlasting kingdom. But not everyone who professes to be a Christian is a true follower of Jesus Christ.
In Los Angeles, many people who lost their homes have fire insurance, but they realize that their policy is insufficient to cover the costs of rebuilding. Likewise, I fear that many people think that they are Christians and that they have fire insurance. But if they are not obeying Christ, then their policy is insufficient.
God wants us to sing and rejoice in our glorious future. Jesus is coming soon to dwell with us! The nations of the earth that survive the Great Tribulation will join Him and become His people. Then we will know that every word He has spoken is true. But only those who know and obey Him will take part. Therefore, let us make our calling and election sure. Let us choose today to deny ourselves and to walk in the Spirit. We are not worldlings but citizens of heaven. Then let us sing and rejoice in our salvation, for the joy of the Lord is our strength!
