1 Chronicles 25-26
“These divisions of the gatekeepers were named for their family leaders, and like the other Levites, they served at the house of the Lord. They were assigned by families for guard duty at the various gates, without regard to age or training, for it was all decided by means of sacred lots.” (1 Chronicles 26:12-13, NLT)
In this section of 1 Chronicles we are told about the organization of things related to worship. There cannot be order without organization. Not only was David a worshiper and warrior, but he was also an excellent administrator.
The gatekeepers were tasked with the responsibility of controlling who was allowed into the temple precincts. For example, no Gentile could come any closer to the sanctuary than the court of Gentiles. This was to protect the temple from being defiled, but it was also to protect people from premature death!
We are blessed that the way has been opened to us into the Most Holy Place through the blood of Jesus Christ. We can approach the throne of grace with confidence. What a glorious privilege we have!
Being a gatekeeper may have not been the most exciting job in the temple, but it was necessary. They were also the first-line personnel that a worshiper would meet. I think of our ushers and security team. The ushers are the first-line team that a visitor meets. The security team makes sure that we all have a safe place to meet and that no violent or evil person is permitted to harm anyone. These may not be the most exciting jobs, but they are necessary, and our men and women who serve in these positions do so as unto the Lord.
The gatekeepers were assigned their duties by sacred lots. We don’t cast lots today to determine the assignment of duties. Instead, we rely upon the Holy Spirit who distributes spiritual gifts as He determines. We who are in leadership seek His guidance to recognize those whom He has set apart for various works. We ask the question, “Are others being blessed by their service?” If we are operating within our gifts and calling, then we will build up the body of Christ and others will be blessed by our ministry.
“For a day in Your courts is better than a thousand. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness.” (Psalm 84:10, NKJV)
I do believe that every believer in Christ is called to serve in the local church. How else can they share their gifts with others? How else can they be ministered to by others. Those who isolate themselves are not wise. But those who make themselves available to the Lord to serve in His body will be blessed and filled with the joy of the Lord!
