1 Chronicles 18

“So the LORD preserved David wherever he went.” (1 Chronicles 18:6, NKJV)

David was beloved of God. From the days of his youth he was a warrior. He was successful because God was with him wherever he went. Even when he was fleeing from Saul, the LORD never abandoned him. Through the hard times, God was teaching David to trust in Him and to be strong in the LORD and in the power of His might.

It would be wonderful if every day was a good day. It would be great if we never had to fight another battle because people loved one another and always did the right thing. Unfortunately, we live in a sinful, fallen and broken world. And behind the scenes, forces of darkness contend against the hosts of heaven for the souls of people. There is an evil day, and we must learn to stand firm in it (Ephesians 6:10-13).

David is a great example as both a worshiper and warrior. Indeed, he was a successful warrior because he was a passionate worshiper. David enthroned the LORD in his heart, and the LORD preserved David in every battle. The secret to success in every endeavor is to seek God first and do whatever He says. We cannot stop the flaming arrows of Satan from being shot at us and at the people we love. But we can stop them from penetrating our hearts. We can hold up our shield of faith, and we can even connect it with the faith-shields of others. We can stand in the evil day because the LORD will help us to stand. We may not ever be as passionate of a worshiper or as skillful of a warrior as David. But if every day we seek God first and ask for His grace to do what pleases Him, then we too will find the LORD preserving us wherever we go and delivering us from every enemy.
