2 Samuel 22:1-25

Yesterday Cindy and I attended a pastors and wives’ luncheon in Emmett, Idaho. It’s always great to get together with likeminded believers for food and fellowship. We had a group prayer time at the end, and I found myself full of gratitude for the rich fellowship and unity that we have in the Lord. There are times in worship where you don’t have the words to express what is in your heart. You are simply overwhelmed with the goodness of God.

I believe that 2 Samuel 22 was such a time in David’s life. We don’t know exactly when David composed it. It says that he wrote it on the day that the LORD delivered him from all his enemies and from Saul. Was this shortly after Saul died? Was it after he became king of Israel? Or was it now toward the end of his life? We don’t know. All we know is that David sang this song of praise to the LORD for all that He had done.

In the first half of this psalm, the thing that most impresses me is David’s personal relationship with the LORD. In verses 2-7, David uses the word “my” fourteen times! The LORD is my rock, my fortress, my savior, my shield, my place of safety, and my refuge. Is God these things to you? If not, then why not? When trouble comes, to whom or to what do you turn?

Today take David’s song of praise to the LORD and personalize it. Make it your own love song to Jesus for all He has done for you. And feel free to add a verse or two of your own. Whatever trouble may be weighing you down will feel lighter as you praise God for His goodness, His steadfast love, and His faithful deliverance. I guarantee it!
