Psalm 125-127

“Those who sow in tears shall reap in joy. He who continually goes forth weeping, bearing seed for sowing, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.” (Psalm 126:5–6, NKJV)

Our lives are a mixture of joy and sorrow. At times, we feel euphoric when everything is going our way. At other times, we feel confused and depressed because everything is crashing down on our heads. Our emotions rise and fall with life’s circumstances.

But the truth is constant.

Someone once told me that if we meditate on our feelings, it will never change the truth, but if we meditate on the truth, it will change how we feel. That is why it is so important for us to abide in the truth of God’s Word. It is the reassuring voice of God to comfort and encourage us through life’s storms. It may also convict us of sin, but even this is not to harm us but to help us. It is the doctor’s diagnosis so he can effectively treat what ails us.

This psalm tells us that we have all been given seed to sow. In Christ’s parables, seed represents the Word of God. Sometimes we sow this in tears. We share God’s Word with someone, but they don’t receive it. Maybe they even react violently to what we say. We might be tempted to stop speaking altogether, but the psalmist encourages us not to quit. We may go forth with weeping, carrying the seed of God’s Word in our hearts. We may sow it, and it seems to fall on deaf ears and hardened hearts. But we must keep on sowing, because some of the seed will take root and bear fruit.

It is interesting that the seed is not affected by the emotions of the sower. He or she could be joyful or depressed, and the seed will function in the same way. The power for new life is in the DNA of the seed and not in the feelings of the farmer.

Likewise, the effectiveness of God’s Word is not based on our feelings. God’s Word will not return to Him empty but will accomplish the purpose for which He has sent it (Isaiah 55:11).

Therefore, have faith, dear Christian. You may be brokenhearted and weeping today. But you have the power of life in you through the Word of God. There may be tears falling on your seed, but they may water it so that it germinates in the heart of another. Be faithful to sow and patient for the fruit. Your labor is not in vain.
