Psalm 145
“They shall speak of the might of your awesome deeds, and I will declare your greatness. They shall pour forth the fame of your abundant goodness and shall sing aloud of your righteousness.” (Psalm 145:6–7, ESV)
One thing I have noticed in Africa is how free the people are when worshiping. They raise their hands, sway back and forth, turn around, and even dance. We pastors from the States appear awkward as we try to follow the worship leader. Singing and rejoicing in the Lord is very important to them. I think we in America could learn some things from them.
One of our pastors observed that perhaps this joyful abandon is because life is so hard in Africa. When the people are finally able to gather in fellowship, it is a time of heartfelt celebration. But it is curious…how can people who have so little materially be so joyful when they worship while we in the West who have so much materially are so reserved? Yes, much of this is due to differences in the culture, but are we just as enthusiastic about giving God thanks and declaring His greatness? Do we sing aloud of His righteousness with such joyful hearts?
Today let us exalt the name of our LORD and joyfully give Him thanks. You might even try raising your hands and singing out loud of His goodness and righteousness. Remember, the joy of the LORD is our strength!
