Amos 2
“Because they have despised the law of the LORD and have not kept His commandments. Their lies lead them astray, lies which their fathers followed.” (Amos 2:4, NKJV)
Amos pronounced judgment on six foreign nations and the nations of Judah and Israel. The foreign nations would be judged for crimes against humanity, while the southern and northern kingdoms of Israel would be judged for their sins against the LORD. They did not keep His commandments and rejected the prophets whom God sent to them. Instead of walking in the truth, they covered themselves with lies. But these lies led them away from God and away from the truth. They believed that dead idols were living gods who could help them, and they forsook the LORD.
This tragic situation began because they despised the law of the LORD. How far they had fallen from David’s passion for God’s word!
“The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul. The testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple. The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart. The commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever. The judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold. Sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. Moreover by them Your servant is warned, and in keeping them there is great reward.” (Psalm 19:7–11, NKJV)
If we would keep away from damnable lies, then we must meditate on the truth and love God’s word. We must rejoice in righteousness and hate evil. Those who pervert grace into a license for sin will be judged. They are self-deceived, and they deceive others, but soon they will be exposed in their folly.
“Now as Jannes and Jambres resisted Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, disapproved concerning the faith; but they will progress no further, for their folly will be manifest to all, as theirs also was.” (2 Timothy 3:8–9, NKJV)
