Psalm 6

“Have compassion on me, LORD, for I am weak. Heal me, LORD, for my bones are in agony. I am sick at heart. How long, O LORD, until you restore me?” (Psalm 6:2–3, NLT)

David is the master of articulating the heights and depths of the human heart. Few have risen to David’s highs as a mighty warrior and the majestic king over all Israel. And few have experienced his lows as he came under the chastening hand of God Almighty on more than one occasion. But David knew the LORD. Given the choice of falling into the hand of man versus the hand of God, David chose God.

“Then David said to Gad, ‘I am in great distress. Let us fall into the hand of the LORD, for his mercy is great; but let me not fall into the hand of man.’” (2 Samuel 24:14, ESV)

I cannot think of any pursuit that is more worthwhile than knowing God. For eternity we will be discovering more and more of His character and works. Those who don’t know Him have distorted images of Him. They imagine Him as being hard and demanding. Or else they think He is soft and permissive. But those who know God know that He is gracious, merciful and compassionate, yet He also punishes sin. The children He loves He rebukes and disciplines. He has punished our sins once and for all by laying them upon Christ at Calvary, but His holiness will not permit us to continue in sin.

David knew that God would come to his rescue when he was in trouble. Though David was weak and sick at heart, he knew the LORD would heal, restore and deliver him. Do you know this?

If you want the Lord to know you on the Day of Judgment, then you must know Him now. He has been there all along, but perhaps you didn’t know it because you didn’t know Him. However, He will make Himself known to you if you will seek Him and call upon the name of Jesus.

“And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.” (Jeremiah 29:13, NKJV)
