Song of Solomon 4:1-5:1
“Awake, O north wind, And come, O south! Blow upon my garden, that its spices may flow out. Let my beloved come to his garden and eat its pleasant fruits.” (Song of Solomon 4:16, NKJV)
In this love song of Solomon, we come to the wedding night. How exciting this is in the life of any couple who has waited patiently for sexual intimacy! The two lovers have been anticipating leaving their former independent lives and becoming one flesh in a union designed by God, as old as humanity. Now the Shunamite bride calls for the gentle breezes to blow upon her garden that its sweet fragrances and fruits may be wonderfully attractive to her husband. This is the most intimate and sensual part of the book. It was also the most embarrassing when I first taught it on the radio!
I won’t comment on it here. (I did that in the podcast.) But I will apply it to our relationship with Jesus. It is marvelous to consider that the husband’s feelings toward his bride parallel Christ’s feelings toward us! Our love for Him is a sweet fragrance to Him. The fruit we bear in Him is His delight.
“For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones. ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.’ This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church.” (Ephesians 5:30–32, NKJV)
We could also pray that the gentle breeze of the Spirit would blow on our church so that the fragrance of our fellowship would be sweet to the Lord and that the fruit of our love will be pleasing to Him. We are His Bride, and He is our Husband, and this honeymoon will never end!
