1 Kings 3:1-15

If you could have anything you wanted from God, what would you ask for? Solomon was given that opportunity. He knew that God had abundantly blessed his father David. He also knew that he was merely a child when it came to governing the people of Israel. So Solomon asked for a “hearing heart” (literal translation) to judge the people, that he could discern between good and evil. The LORD was so pleased with Solomon’s request that He gave him what he asked for: an understanding heart such as no one else who has ever lived. But God also gave Solomon what he didn’t ask for: riches, honor and a long life. There was only one condition: Solomon must walk in the ways of the LORD.

I can relate to the desire of having a “hearing heart”. I want to know God’s voice. I want to have His wisdom and understanding to make right decisions and to give good counsel to others. Fortunately, God has promised to give wisdom to everyone who asks for it.

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” (James 1:5, NKJV)

I can’t tell you how many times I have come to the end of myself and prayed this prayer: “Father, give me wisdom in this thing. Show me what to do.” And then I listen. I don’t always make this petition right away. Often it is only after I’ve struggled for awhile to work it out in my own strength. Finally, when I am exasperated and exhausted, I come to God and ask for His wisdom and help. And do you know what? He is quick and faithful to give me the wisdom and grace that I need. So why do I wait so long?

Would you like to make the best choices? Then come to your Heavenly Father with childlike humility and ask for a hearing heart. Then be quick to listen and faithful to walk in His ways. This is the secret to a blessed life!
