Proverbs 31:10-31
“Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, but a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her own works praise her in the gates.” (Proverbs 31:30–31, NKJV)
Solomon began Proverbs with advice from a father about wisdom. He ended with advice from a mother about choosing the right wife. Many men have erred in this choice. They chose beauty, charm, intellect or "the chase" and have later regretted their decision. Many women have played to this weakness in men, becoming skillful in the art of attraction, but they have left behind a string of broken hearts.
But there are those women who seek to fear the LORD and serve Him. They are virtuous, hardworking, rising early, and staying up late. They are wise in business and money management. They provide for their children and handle their employees with care. They are concerned for the underprivileged and respect and strengthen their husbands. They clothe themselves not with fancy garments, hairdos and jewelry, but with wisdom, strength and good works. They use words not to deceive and destroy but to speak the truth in love. Therefore, her children rise up and bless her, and her husband praises her.
“There are many virtuous and capable women in the world, but you surpass them all!” (Proverbs 31:29, NLT)
Yes, Lemuel’s mother knew that a bad wife could ruin her son, but a virtuous wife would do him immeasurable good. I am blessed to have such a wife!
If you are a man who is seeking a woman, then look hard for these virtues. Go into courtship and marriage with both eyes wide open. Above all, search for a woman who fears God and hates evil. And seek to be the kind of man that such a woman would want. And if you are a woman looking for a husband, then seek first to excel in these virtues. You may see other more attractive and seductive women hooking many men around you. You may be tempted to change your tactics and compromise your beliefs. But don’t do it! Those who trust in the LORD and continue to do good will never be put to shame. One day you will be praised by your husband, your children, your own works, and by God!
