Amos 6
“You push away every thought of coming disaster, but your actions only bring the day of judgment closer. How terrible for you who sprawl on ivory beds and lounge on your couches, eating the meat of tender lambs from the flock and of choice calves fattened in the stall.” (Amos 6:3–4, NLT)
Amos had strong words against the complacency of Israel and Judah. They thought they were prospering in their luxury and security, but this would all be taken away from them in a moment when God brought their enemies upon them. Their condition reminds me of the church of Laodicea.
“You say, ‘I am rich. I have everything I want. I don’t need a thing!’ And you don’t realize that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked.” (Revelation 3:17, NLT)
What matters is not what we think of ourselves, but what the LORD thinks of us. God weighs us not by our net worth in dollars but by our faith in Him and our good works toward others.
The children of Israel were guilty of complacency, procrastination, pride and self-indulgence, and they were not grieved over the sins around them. Therefore, God’s judgment would soon come upon them, and there would be no escape.
We are also living in evil days. We believe the Lord is coming soon for His church before God unleashes His wrath upon the Christ-rejecting world. Let us remember Christ’s warning to His last days church:
“But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly. For it will come as a snare on all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth. Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.” (Luke 21:34–36, NKJV)
