Exodus 33:12-23

“Now therefore, I pray, if I have found grace in Your sight, show me now Your way, that I may know You and that I may find grace in Your sight.” (Exodus 33:13, NKJV)

Moses had a special and intimate relationship with God. He had found grace in the LORD’s sight. Consequently, God heard Moses’ prayer when he interceded for the people. But do you think Moses was content with this? No, Moses wanted an even closer relationship.

God said that He would not go up with them to the Promised Land because He might destroy them. Instead, He would send His angel to go with them. But this was not good enough for Moses. If the LORD wouldn’t go up with them, then he wanted to stay put. He didn’t want this angelic “compromise” because of the people’s sin. Moses prevailed with God, and the LORD agreed to go with them and give them rest because Moses had found grace in His sight, and He knew Moses by name.

Was Moses satisfied with this? No, Moses sought to know God even more.

“And he said, ‘Please, show me Your glory.’” (Exodus 33:18, NKJV)

How much do we really desire to know God? How much do we long for His way rather than our own? God is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him (Hebrews 11:6). When we seek Him with our whole heart, God rewards us with His presence, His grace, and His rest. Then we see His glory in everyday circumstances. God also rewards us by answering our prayers and showing us which way to go.
