Proverbs 2
“Wisdom will save you from the immoral woman, from the seductive words of the promiscuous woman. She has abandoned her husband and ignores the covenant she made before God. Entering her house leads to death; it is the road to the grave.” (Proverbs 2:16–18, NLT)
Solomon esteemed wisdom and understanding above everything else. He knew that God generously gives wisdom to those who seek it. It will be a shield to you, preserving your way, delivering you from the one who says perverse things. Moreover, wisdom will save you from the immoral woman.
How many men have fallen before her? When I was in my twenties, someone very close to me, whom I looked up to as a spiritual mentor and man of God, committed adultery with another woman in our church. This “affair” broke up his family and removed him from ministry. This was a lesson I never forgot.
We must all be on our guard. If David, the man after God’s own heart and sweet psalmist of Israel could fall, then anyone can fall. The apostle Paul warns us:
“Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.” (1 Corinthians 10:12–13, NKJV)
Temptation will surely come. If it is not one thing, it will be another. If we daily receive God’s words and apply our hearts to understanding them, then we will have a good safeguard to keep us on the narrow path leading to everlasting life. We will have the sword of the Spirit to counter the devil’s lies. But we must still look for the way of escape and exit quickly!
