Proverbs 8:1-21
“For wisdom is better than rubies, and all the things one may desire cannot be compared with her.” (Proverbs 8:11, NKJV)
Solomon personifies wisdom as a woman calling out from a high place. She wants the simple ones to follow her voice for their own wellbeing. But many will ignore her. They prefer following their own heart rather than heeding the truth. Haven’t we all done this at times?
Following the voice of wisdom requires humility, discipline, and self-denial. It means that we put off what is pleasurable now to receive what is valuable later. It involves pleasing God and others rather than self.
But wisdom is better than rubies, and nothing we desire compares with her. She will watch over you and guide you in the path of life, honor and wealth—if not monetary wealth, then certainly spiritual wealth that endures forever.
When we desire wisdom, we are really desiring Christ.
“But to those called by God to salvation, both Jews and Gentiles, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God.” (1 Corinthians 1:24, NLT)
Wonderful counsel belongs to Him—also understanding and strength. He is better than all earthly treasures, and nothing we desire compares to Him. Whoever seeks Him diligently will find Him. Have you discovered Him to be your unending fountain of wisdom?
