Proverbs 5

“My son, pay attention to my wisdom…for the lips of an immoral woman drip honey, and her mouth is smoother than oil...” (Proverbs 5:1–3, NKJV)

Too many have fallen. Too many have given their strength to an immoral woman. Therefore, Solomon warned his son about this grave danger. Tragically, Solomon himself would fall into this trap. So, how can a person avoid the pitfalls of sexual sin?

First, you must pay attention. If you are unaware of the enemy’s tactics, if you are ignorant of your own weaknesses, then you will fall. You are not the exception. Others who are stronger than you have stepped on this mine and blown up their lives. Her lips drip honey, and her mouth is smoother than oil. She says, “You’re so strong and handsome and smart.” And she only wants to be with you. Guys are suckers for flattery. Her words are delightful at first, but later they will cut you to pieces and destroy your life.

Second, you must flee. Remove your way far from her. Don’t play around with temptation thinking you won’t get hurt. Jesus said that if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out (Matthew 5:29). He doesn’t want us to have missing eyes, but to deal radically with sin. If you must get a flip phone or cancel your internet service, then do it! Cut off every access point of the enemy.

Third, you must rejoice in the wife of your youth. God created sexual relations between husband and wife to be beautiful, pleasurable and satisfying within the bonds of marriage. So, if you’re married, then be faithful, and if you’re not married, then pray that God brings you someone or helps you to be content in Him. Solomon compares sex to clean, pure water in a cistern. How refreshing this is to drink at the end of a long, hard day! Be intoxicated with the love of your wife for life, and don’t drink swamp water! God desires that our marriage vows be like the banks of a river, keeping the water deep, flowing and powerful throughout the course of life.

“Heavenly Father, help us to pay attention to the enemy’s tactics and to our own weaknesses. Help us to flee temptation and rejoice in all your ways. Thank you for the many things you graciously give for our enjoyment. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.”
